Question 1- In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media product?

Here we evaluate in three parts how our media products use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

Part 1 Digipak-  In this video the digipak is discussed how we used influences from real media products and how we developed used and challenged forms and conventions from those influences. As well has how we challenged used and developed forms of the indie rock genre.

Part 2 website- includes a screen-cast of Isla's website and two websites that inspired us. The two websites that we looked at were: Ed Sheeran and Coldplay. This is because we wanted a couple of well established artists so that we can take ideas from artists that were doing well and adapt the forms and conventions of these artist's websites to suit a new music artist. We chose these two artists in particular because Isla is an Indie Rock artist but with influences from Pop, also. This is why we mainly looked at Coldplay. The band began as an Indie Rock group but they have began to include more Pop influences in their music and branding. This is exactly the route that we wanted to go down with Isla.

Part 3 music video- Here we have looked at how our music video uses develops and challenges forms and conventions from real media products.

Question 2- How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Cross media branding and synergy is essential to ensure our main product and ancillary texts can be seen as one brand. Successful synergy ensures the Isla brand can re recognised across all album products, from the music video to website to magazine covers. The following presentation highlights the connections made between our products, demonstrating whether we have been successful in creating a brand for our artist.

Magazine article research

Before making our own magazine article, we wanted to research ones that already existed in order to work out what are the most important things to include.

In the magazine article above, a large photograph of the artist can be seen on the left, with an interview on the right.
The interview is displayed in a 'question and answer' structure, with the questions in bold so that they can be clearly distinguished from the rest of the text.

Things to Include
When looking at many different magazine articles, these were the key features that we identified:

  • Photograph of artist
  • Q&A
  • Quotes from artist in a larger font to break up the main body of the article

The golden globes 2018

Celebrities male and female have worn black to the golden globes 2018 in protest of the uprise of sexual harassment within Hollywood. Many celebrities shared their support on social media, and made inspirational speeches as they accepted their awards. This is an interesting movement as people from different backgrounds, different roles in the media with different experiences within the media industry have grouped together to show support on a topic of great impact both in their profession but also over the world, effecting  both people with media careers but also the audience who watch and see them.

Natalie Portman slams the directors categories pointing out that all nominees are male.

Celebrities tweeted their support.

I proudly wore black last night at the Golden Globes to say Times Up!
Times up for gender inequality,
Times up for racism
Times up for sexual harassment!
This movement isn't just for Hollywood, it is for the world the youth demands to build.

Group reflection

This is our refection of our work as a group.
How did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
As a group we split up the tasks equally, Leah and Lorna focused on the blog posts while Jess spent a lot of time editing. We used organisational skills and communicated on a group chat in order to split work load fairy but still ensure the work was getting done.
How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?
We planned our sequence by using shot lists and storyboards to properly visualize what the footage will look like prior to shooting so that we didn't waste time filming shots that wouldn't be relevant to our music video. This really helped us to prioritize filming based on natural light and changing tides.
What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it?
We used a cannon 700d  to film our music video, we then uploaded the footage onto the computer and used premiere pro to edit our music video. we used you tube to learn new editing skills. the technologies we used were familiar  to us as we had previously used them before. when it came to editing you tube was a useful source of information if we wanted to try new effects we hadn't previously used before.
What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
when considering the creation of our music video we had to take into account each group members personal and school schedules to ensure we could all equally participate and cooperate in each stage. we also considered each group members strengths so that we could use those strengths to our advantage.

How does it compare with filming an opening to a film?
Creating a music video allows you to be more creative in comparison to a film opening. Editing can be abstract and the video does not necessarily need to make sense of have a clear narrative.

What are your strengths as a group member?
Lorna; My strength as a group member is my organisational skills, I ensured that the group were all kept informed and up to date with work.  I created a sheet so that everyone in the group kept their  blogs updated. My weaknesses as a group member was

Leah:I think that one of my strengths as a group member is that I was organised and able to get all of the work done that was required. I also was active when sharing creative ideas.

Jess:My strengths as a group member were that I persevered with difficult editing techniques and researched how to add some more technical effects in my spare time. My weaknesses were that I was not as organised as I had hoped to be, and relied on my ideas that came at the time of filming rather than brainstorming beforehand.

Filming reflection

How did it go? What went well? How could it have gone better?

As a group I think we were successful in the varied shots we took, we varied our locations which made our music video more interesting, we each played a role in the filming of our music video,  the artist, director, camera guy. This was an advantage that we each played different roles and were good at different things because it meant that we worked well as a team, sharing equal amounts of work.
We kept on top of filming and organised ourself as a group. We used group chat so that we could keep in contact with each other  and organise when we could all film together.

Filming went well. It was a different experience in comparison to filming for a film opening as we were able to be more creative with our shots, using a variety of angles, locations and settings. However something which could have gone better was one our first filming day we didn't get as many shots as we needed, we underestimated the amount of shots which would be needed in a music video. This meant that once we began editing we realised our mistake and had to go back to the location and further filming more shots. Although in the end we managed to get more shots, it was a minor inconvenience. However it is something that we learnt from.

From looking at our final product I think filming was successful, we kept the video interesting and used a varied amount of shots at different locations.

Final construction

This is our final music video.
